Occasionally I just get so fed up with the trash along the main street near our home that I grab some plastic grocery bags and my gloves and go pick the stuff up. Today there was a very large mashed up cardboard box. I hauled it (on foot) to the nearest businesses, hoping to place it in a dumpster. Alas, the dumpsters were locked. No dumpster diving allowed in our hood! I left it there, between two locked dumpsters. Someone will probably grumble about it, but at least it's not out where everyone can see it.
I also picked up 25 cents worth of recyclables. A quick rinse and they're ready to be cashed in. It's not always a huge effort to save the world. If we each do our bit, we'll see a big difference in a short time.
Oh, and it's not always a thankless job. Today a neighbor made a point of poking his head out the door to thank me. Making a difference feels good.
